A Guide to the Birds of the Galapagos Islands
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (23 December, 1996)
Authors: Isabel Castro and Antonia Phillips
Average review score:

THE guide book to birds in the Galápagos
If you want to "do" the birds in depth, this is THE book for learning about the incredible endemics that gave rise to Charles Darwin's theories about evolution, as well as the resident and migrant birds for the "Islas Encantadas". (If what you need is a portable, topical and fairly complete field guide to all the critters here, get "An Identification Guide to the Birds, Mammals, and Reptiles of the Galpagos Islands" by Andy Swash et al, ISBN: 0300088647, here on Amazon instead.)

Unlike another reviewer, I DO recommend going to the Galápagos, but I also suggest doing research (Barry Boyce's guide, and others) to choose a "green" small boat trip of a week or ten days, one that assures minimum impact.

Politically, these unique and valuable islands are in peril right now from what has heretofore been an uncaring and corrupt government that has allowed illegal migration of people and their cirtters (one result was the 2002 oil spill off San Cristobal), untrammeled shark finning, sea cucumber gathering and commercial fishing within the boundaries of a most unique and valuable World Heritage Site and presumably legally-protected Ecuadorian National Park. Ecotourism has provided the money, concern and motivation to keep these islands preserved for research and future generations- for now. GO on this trip of a lifetime, but please tread lightly, observe and learn, support the "Islas Encantadas" from being fished out and plundered.

Evolution at its Best!
This guide chronicles all you ever needed to know about the birds of the Galapagos! As a biologist, I am interested in many kinds of books about different species of animals, and this is among the best I have seen about the Galapagos. Hopefully more people who are eco-conscious will decide to buy guides like this one, instead of actually visiting the islands directly, we're leaving too many footprints on a valuable resource. Whether you are dreaming of a trip to the islands, or just plain curious, this book will help you become well aquainted with the birds of the Galapagos.

Hayward Sanitarium 1-10
A great story line and fine performances. but the ending is missing. The final episodes to the story were never performed or recorded, so we are left hanging mid-climax with no conclusion in sight.

Hayward Sanitarium
These tapes are the best audio horror that I have ever heard. They make you feel like you are part the story. I would recommend this set to anyone who loves radio theater in the same vain as Masterpiece Theater.

Healing Stones
Published in Paperback by Chieveley Berkshire (01 November, 1998)
Author: Sue Phillips
Average review score:

Think twice about using crystals!
This book made me realise that we are raping the earth to mine crystals when found stones and pebbles contain the very minerals we want to use for magic and healing. It explains how to use ordinary stones in a comprehensive and highly readable fashion. It should be compulsory reading for anyone who collects crystals.

Magical
A delightful book. Well researched and full of insight into the magical properties of healing stones. Sue Phillips is to be congratulated on writing a book on a subject that has beguiled many people over the centuries. Well recommended.

How I Built Rusty

We made the dog it was fun
it was fun

Build a better dog with this book!
How I Built Rusty is a clever creativity book which shows kids how to build their own cardboard dog, while treating them to a fetching tale about a kid named Wilbur whose parents won't let him get a dog. You guessed it--Wilbur builds his own dog from scratch! I liked this book because it applies reading and creativity. Kids read along with story rhymes and learn to follow instructions to put together their own 3-D dog, Rusty.

Cartoon-style illustrations makes this book a fun read. Your kids will also get hands-on learning as they push tabs into slots, and pay close attention to directions.

No glue, scissors, or power tools required other than an active imagination. Just remember you can't walk this dog or take it swimming. It's paper!

This book would make a great gift for younger kids (grades 2-5) and makes for a fun rainy day project. Don't be surprised if Rusty the dog takes up a prominent space on your child's bookcase.

Building Rusty can be a great bonding moment for parents and kids.Parents can take this book to the next level by creating their very own recycled art project out of junk with their kids! No rust required, just a good dose of imagination!

These authors have the ability to change people's consciousness and make a difference in each of our lives. Their examples and stories make this an easy and motivational read. This book is entertaining, fun and instructional!

Inspiring and Entertaining

I loved the uplifting tone of the book -- and after reading it, I was motivated to re-evaluate what "successful" means to me! They encouraged me overcome my "success inferiority complex" and to eliminate the need to constantly compare myself to others! This is a warm, inspiring book that is sure to delight readers from all walks of life.

This book was the absolute best! My nine month old little boy was entranced. This is the first book that he has let me read from cover to cover without stopping. Then he wants me to read it again. It is the household favorite. Everybody needs a copy! This one will last a lifetime if we don't wear out the pages!

Imaginary Communities: Utopia, the Nation, and the Spatial Histories of Modernity
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (July, 2002)
Author: Phillip E. Wegner
Average review score:

All the World's a Theory
In Imaginary Communities, Wegner glides from heady theorists like Jameson and Zizek to popular fiction like Dissposessed and to "cannonical classics" like 1984. Always readable, always introducing and always challenging, Wegner traces the evolution of the 'uptopia' novel while reorienting our reading of distopias by asking 'who's utopia are they?' Wegner sets up the concept of utopia as a mode of reading, asking us to position the texts we encounter in terms of it and in terms of social space as well, thus he discusses nation building and the onset of modernity in terms of the development of the utopia novel. Far reaching and deeply penetrating, whether you're a professor of literature, an avid sci-fi fan, an activist, or even an urban design specialist, Imaginary Communities is a 'place' worth visiting.

Buy this book!
You have to buy this book! To explain it would only to be to rewrite it. You must experience this for yourself. Looking for an existential explanation of how you participate within communities, make decisions and share the bond with so many others, those that you will never meet? This is the explanation.

Impressionists in Winter: Effets De Neige
Published in Hardcover by Philip Wilson Pub Ltd (October, 1999)
Authors: Charles S. Moffett, Eliza E. Rathbone, Katherine Rothkopf, Joel Isaacson, Phillips Collection, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and Center for the Arts at Yerba Buena Gardens
Average review score:

Fantastique!
Add this gem to your art book collection. As a screen printer, I have been increasingly seduced by the "winter palette". This wonderful volume compiles the best of the Impressionists as they, too, came to appreciate and explore the unique light, the effects of the weather, the shapes of hibernating nature, the muted hues, and the brooding melancholy of Effets de Neige.

deply, deeply moving
i saw this show in san francisco, and, as an artist, i was moved to silent reverie. the works are astonishing! whoever asssembled them deserves the thanks of anyone who has known the cold, stark beauty of winter and kept its memory in their souls. the artists who captured these moments in time are unmatched in contemporary painting. simply, i thank god for their lives and work. as one who still believes in the power of beauty upon the human spirit, i walked away from this show elevated and in awe. most particularly, i was enveloped by the works of gustave caillebotte --- so little known in america; so wondrous in the realization of his vision and his time. this show is serene. and this book comes close to reflecting its essence.
